Wu was born in 1964 to a relatively ordinary Chinese family. She studied Navigation Engineering at Northwestern Polytechnical University and went on to work in many different industries, including the Qianwei Meter Factory. She and her husband took a small investment in 1995 and founded Longfor Properties. When the company went public, it attracted a wide array of investors, including Singapore’s government, Ping An Insurance and Temasek Holdings. Wu divorced her husband in 2012 and her stake in the company fell to 45%. She is still one of the most powerful self-made women in the world.
